Breaking Old Habits

January 26th, 2009

I’ve been frequenting the Astral Pulse forums for about 20 days now and I have read at least that many ways for achieving the altered state of consciousness called an OBE.  The techniques are important, but if you look at each technique, it seems that the key to success boils down to one single thing, which is not falling asleep, at least mentally.  This seems very foreign to me and takes extreme focus to pull it off.

I have been asking myself why I require so much intense focus to change the way in which I fall asleep, and the answer is more obvious than you might think. When you consider that it took your entire life to learn how to fall asleep you will then suddenly realize that it may take the entire remainder of your life to change that habit, well maybe not that long, but it will take time.

This is not just restricted to the world of out of body experiences and transformations of consciousness. The reason I noticed this was not OBE related at all. I have recently switched to the Chrome web browser and love it, however I can’t stop clicking on the IE icon. I have spent the last 3 days clicking on the wrong icon and then literally a fraction of a second later kicking myself for clicking it.

That’s why when we want to change old habits, our most important path is being awake to our experience. We need to pay attention to what we are doing and notice every little thing. We must realize that if it takes days to reverse a habit of clicking a simple computer icon, that it may take weeks, months and possibly years to change our sleeping habits. These habits are hard coded and must be rewritten.

The irony here is that when we break these habits we realize that the waking life that we have been experienceing was nothing but dream itself. It’s only through breaking these habits that we can set our spirits free and experience life rather than being stuck in patterns of inertia.

Extreme Vibrations – Chickened Out

January 24th, 2009

I woke up at 7:30 AM this morning and noticed that my wife had moved over to my daughter’s room at some point and laid down with her. My daughter is almost 3 and occasionally will have nightmares or what not and come and get one of us. This was a perfect opportunity for a projection attempt. I went and emptied my bladder and then headed back to bed.

The temperature in the house was about 70 degrees so I snuggled up under the comforter and put my headphones and began listening to  ”Hemi-Sync Support for Journeys Out of the Body – Condition A”. My technique this time was to repeat affirmations over and over while picturing myself sitting or floating in my cubical at work. I have such a nice cubical right by a window in the greenbelt of Austin. My affirmations were: “I’m pure thought”, “I now transfer to my higher energy state”, “I am not floating in my cubical”, “I am out of body”, and “It feels great to be free”.

It seemed that my focus kept bouncing around from the affirmations and back to the visualization of my cubical. I could see my cubical in my mind with crystal clarity. My attention would also occasionally redirect to what I was seeing in the blackness behind my eyes. I noticed that in the blackness there really wasn’t blackness. I don’t know if you have ever put a magnet on one of the old school tube TVs, but there is that discoloration, and that’s kind of what I was seeing in my vision except the colors were more subtle and would start out covering my complete field of vision and would then move inward to a point and disappear.  This created a pulsating color effect.

I kept doing my visualizations and affirmations and then about 15 minutes into it I noticed that the colors in the blackness ceased and things got quiet. “Condition A” was fading and was barely audible. This is very hard to explain but the blackness felt like it expanded and somehow became 3D. I know that sounds strange, but that’s the feeling I got. The very next second the vibrations started, and they were extreme.  The blackness started fading away and all the I could see was a white light getting brighter and brighter. This was not a point of light but was my entire field of vision which was fading from darkness to white light. It was so intense that my heart started beating like 150 bpm. I could not sustain this and bailed.

When I woke up, and this is the really strange part, my vision / perspective of the room was all distorted for about 5 minutes. I had no depth perception at all and it was if I could reach out and touch the wall that was 20 feet away.

The good news is that I know the new technique works and I was able to experience some new things. I think I just need to calm myself down like I have done in the past when I reach the vibrational state. This time was just much more intense than I have ever experienced so it caught me off guard.

Hemi-Sync Support for Journeys Out of the Body

January 24th, 2009

jotbI brought up the Gateway Experience over on the Astral Pulse Forum a few days ago and CFTraveler mentioned Hemi-Sync Support for Journeys Out of the Body” as a cheaper alternative.

I have listened to the first 4 tracks of the “Gateway Experience” and the material is great and I was able to see some results but after looking over the “Support for Journeys Out of the Body” series I think I am going to put “Gateway Experience” aside for awhile. I want to pursue my more immediate goal which is to achieve OBEs. This is no way means that I giving up on the “Gateway Experience” as I plan mastering each wave in the series.

Here’s a brief overview of Hemi-Sync Support for Journeys Out of the Body” from the Monroe Institute’s website:

The out-of-body-experience (OBE) is a state in which one’s consciousness appears to depart the physical body allowing perception by means other than those of the physical senses.  Hemi-Sync® Support for Journeys Out of the Body is an in-home training series designed to provide Hemi-Sync audio-guidance to those who desire to achieve this state. With practice, one can be brought up to the borderland sleep state, and through it, to experience the out-of-body state with full conscious awareness. 6 CDs with Guidance Manual.

So you see that while the “Gateway Experience” series is well rounded, this series is targeted at relaxation and Out of the Body experiences.

The price is $99 and can be found on The Monroe Institute website.

The New approach

January 23rd, 2009

It’s been about a month now and I have had some success projecting using a purely affirmation based approach. With this approach I have been keeping all of my focus on one or two affirmations up to the edge of falling asleep while putting my body into a deep state of relaxation.

This old approach works and I have learned a lot from it, which is why I have decided to start using a slightly different approach.

While on the way home from work yesterday a thought began to take shape in my head. It seems like my old approach and every other documented approach has one thing in common, and that is to stay alert on the border of sleep while focusing your entire attention on something / anything without falling asleep. This seems to be key for attaining an out of body experience. It doesn’t matter what the attention is focused on as long as you stay alert while relaxing on the border of sleep.

The beauty of this is that one approach mentioned in William Buhlman’s books “Adventures Beyond the Body” is to use visualization as the focus point. He would inspect several objects in his waking life and then was able to visualize the objects in great detail while relaxing and approaching the border state.

I have been an artist in the past and then most importantly over the last 2 years I have been programming with complex data structures and SQL. I have learned to visualize huge complex sets of data in my head and manipulate this data with pure thought without seeing anything on the computer screen. I want to use this power of visualization that I have developed and hold my focus on a set of objects while on the border or sleep.

In conclusion I think that this new approach will yield better results. I will continue to use my affirmations up to the point that I start seeing random thoughts enter my consciousness and then I will shift my focus to visualizing my cubical at work.
