Feel Asleep Inside Dream and Became Lucid
Last night I was feeling very tired. This is mostly because I have been working my day job plus staying up late studying and getting my web programming business going. I wasn’t expecting or trying to have an OOBE or a lucid dream last night, I was simply trying to get a good night’s rest.
I fell asleep listening to Electric Light Orchestra – Out of the Blue and then woke back up a few minutes later choking after sucking some saliva down my windpipe. What a horrible feeling it is to wake up gasping for air but it seems to happen to me frequently. I fell back asleep after this and didn’t wake back up.
I don’t remember much of my dreams last night but at some point I found myself in a dream laying in my bed trying to fall asleep. I remember trying to get comfortable but couldn’t. I then felt someone tucking me in. I am not sure who it was but as they tucked me in I became extremely relaxed and then instinctively went for an exit technique. I felt myself sink down into the bed and then I drifted out of the bed an into a upright position standing in the doorway leading out of my bedroom.
I walked down the hallway and then down the stairs to the first floor of our apartment. When I got to the bottom of the stairs I started thinking about whether or not I was awake or asleep so I tried the wall test by attempting to stick my foot though the wall next to the door that leads out of the apartment. The wall seemed pretty solid to me so I figured that I might be awake. I decided to head outside and see if things out there matched waking reality.
I walked out the door and noticed that things looked and felt real but the outside area did not match what’s really in front of my apartment. It’s hard to explain this and you have to experience an OOBE or lucid dream to understand. Even when things don’t match waking reality, it’s hard to convince yourself that it’s not waking reality. The reason for this is how vivid the experience usually is. There is not a difference as far as senses go between being awake or being lucid or in an OOBE. The only clues that you have to go on are reality fluctuations. Even though I normally know that I am not at my real house, the experience itself is very real and normally I am not asking “Is this real?”, I am asking “Where the hell am I?”.
When I waked out of the apartment I found myself standing on a large elevated concrete porch under a white aluminum awning. I was in an urban neighborhood and there was a road directly in front of the house and there were houses on either side of the road about 30 ft apart from each other.
I walked down the stairs and out into the street and looked to my left and noticed a man about 100 yards away walking down the street towards me. It was at this point that I noticed that my clothes had disappeared so I ran back up the porch stairs and ducked out of view. I reality fluctuation happened again and my clothes were back. I wanted to test the environment so I jumped up in the air and rather than falling back to the ground I hovered about 2 ft off the ground. seeing that I was able to fly I decided to explore the neighborhood from the air.
I floated down the stairs and this time turned right and headed down the street. I traveled several houses down and noticed that on the left there was a house with a carport and under it were about 5 or 6 women. I went over and said hi or something that I don’t remember and they started being snobbish. I started becoming too aware at this point and felt the environment around me begin to degrade and a few seconds later found myself back in my normal awareness awake in bed.
I don’t know if this was a lucid dream or an OOBE but overall it was a cool experience. Maybe next time something more trippy will happen.

Hey David, good to see you back also.. I know I can’t talk, I’m on and off all the time.. I was meaning to post two experiences I had in the past two days but saw you posted so may leave it for later..
One of the experiences was while in what I believe was a lucid dream.. Like your post above I decided to test reality but touching the physical surroundings… Like you.. Bingo! Feels like normal tactile sensory perception.. Before that I was sure I was dreaming but after touching the object and getting this type of sensory feedback I was now unsure and felt I may be awake..
My conclusion: Using touch and physical sensation as a test to discern dream from physical reality may produce more false results than positive ones. I may continue to test this but for now based on many similar past experiences I currently conclude that touch may be highly unreliable for testing reality. This may be overcome however, through changing my expectation about what happens in the dream/OBE should I touch a physical object. I/we still seem governed by our expectations…:)
Be well, PEACE, Dean
Hey, don’t let me stop you from posting
. Seriously, I love to read your experiences and I know how writing about experiences reinforces and solidifies them.
Regarding reality, even dreams are reality, just a different type of awareness. Whether I am dreaming or responding to your comment I am still in reality. My personal opinion is that humans have limited themselves by thinking that only waking life falls into the category of reality. I like to bring up the subject of reality in my posts to point out that the senses while in an OOBE are equal to or better than the waking senses.
In this experience I was simply trying to figure out if I was awake or asleep or perhaps something else.
Hey, I found this site yesterday after experiencing a few weird things recently and I read every post from the beginning up until now. I really like the site, especially the earlier posts where you mention the techniques you use to enter the varying states (what you listened to, timings etc).
Also, please note that this comment / question is not directly related to this post, but as its a general comment by me I though id just comment on the most recent post!
My comment / question is this: How do you differentiate between an OOB and a LD? Now to me, and my very limited experience, an OOBE is exactly that. What confuses me about some of the posts on here (and I mean no disrespect, just want to understand!) is that some of the posts where you (you meaning any of the posters) feels like you are OOB but are seeing a distorted reality (i.e. being at a location with your parents acknowledging your existence). Surely in this case you are not out of body (because its a fair assumption that your parents would a) not be at this location and b) not acknowelding you if they were due to you being on a different plane) but are experiencing a Lucid Dream. Is this not correct? My understanding was that LD’s are like dreams (distorted reality, people you know being there etc) and OOBEs are literally you being out of your body in the present time, so if you went OOB in your house and went downstairs, it would be identical in appearance if you had woke up and went downstairs in physical plane.
I admit my knowledge in this matter is very limited, I have not yet read much material on this as yet (books on order!) but this kinda strikes me as something not quite right!
Can you explain?!
Thanks for reading all of my posts
I feel honored.
I started experimenting with OOBE and lucid dreaming about 1.5 years ago after listening to my friend bring it up over and over again. I try not to dismiss things without validating them first through personal experience. This by no means this is always the case though as some things are best left alone. Some of my posts my conflict with each other because this is very much a learning experience for me and my ideas and opinions of what’s actually happening fluctuates greatly as I learn more and is subjective. This was my intention which is to have it all documented so that I can see how my views change over time.
There are many misconceptions about these altered states of awareness with the first one being the OOBE terminology. It’s my opinion that nobody really knows if they are out of body or not. I don’t know if I am actually out of body. What does that actually mean? I don’t even think humans have a grasp on what it actually means to be “in the body” much less “out of body”. It’s simply a acronym we use to best describe what we really can’t describe.
In response to how to know the difference between an OOBE and a LD, it’s highly subjective. You must experience it and then decide for yourself. To date I have not validated that I am actually OOB but I do experience a very huge difference between what I think is an OOBE VS a LD. The difference is that in a LD it feels just like that, dreamy. When my perception indicates to me that I am OOB, I feel vibrations (like electricity flowing through my body), I have my 5 senses and I feel as though I am in waking awareness. There have been OOBEs where I honestly thought that I was awake and somehow passed out and woke up. I can feel my skin, I can hear my voice, I can see perfectly clear like I am right now, my thoughts are coherent and I know my name age etc and so on. Am I actually out of body? I don’t know. More validation will be required to answer that.
As far as reality goes, whatever you are experiencing is reality, even dreams. Astral Dynamics goes into explaining the different planes including the RTZ (Real Time Zone). This is what Robert Bruce describes as the reality closest to our own which is almost an exact mirror copy of the physical reality awareness that I am typing this reply in. This is the reality he believes that people mistake for the physical plane. He also talks about reality fluctuations that take place in the RTZ. These are basically things that you notice as different when OOB. I highly recommend this book.
I got to get back to work, but thanks for dropping in and I hope you find what you are seeking. Here’s some videos that I highly recommend.

Thanks David, much appreciate your response.
As a matter of interest, how do you induce OOBE/LD’s now? I know you started with Hemi Sync Journeys Out of the Body condition A and sometimes Gateway Wave 1 Intro to Focus 10 – do you still use these or has your Chi Generator taken over?
Im finding that with Condition A I get strong vibration feelings in my legs, but nowhere else.
I am also trying Lucidology’s Timer Method and it certainly gives me sleep paralyses but nothing else! I just cant move!
I have however only been trying for a week since I had a very strange OOB feeling last week and realized this has happened to me many times before, only this was very clear so I started looking into it, so hope to progress alot more soon!
Anyway, I look forward to more blog posts from you all!
If you are reaching sleep paralysis then you are there, you just need to master some sort of exit technique. For me it seems to come natural when I get to sleep paralysis, I just relax and go with it and then normally roll our to the right and find myself standing in my room. When you get to the sleep paralysis just try to think about rolling out of bed and feel yourself rolling out of bed.
I am still a rookie at this so what normally happens is that when I first exit I feel grounded and in control. Everything is vivid and my thoughts are clear, but as I move around I can feel my subconscious fighting to take back control and that’s when I usually either wake up or I find myself reeled back into my sleeping body (or so it seems). It’s crucial that when you exit you demand clarity. Try to scream it out loud. It will be very strange to hear your voice in this state but it will help you see if things are dim around you.
Lately, as stated in this post I have not had much activity and this is mainly because I work two jobs (one being my web design business) and when I sleep I sleep like a rock. This will change though, I have been reading more spirituality books lately and I plan to start making actual attempts at 4 AM. So I will have some posts on here again soon.
As far as the Hemi-Sync or other binaural beats go, it’s good for getting your body and mind relaxed. I still use tracks like this every night, but normally just to relax and my intent is to sleep, not to LD or OOBE.
Dean is getting much better at this and may have suggestions as well.
Hi Jonathan & David,
This “reality” is very interesting… I haven’t been on the malleable light since the 10th of March… So only just got your reply today thx David..
This morning I was dreaming that I was on the malleable light reading posts from David.. I hadn’t come onto the site lately so this was interesting.. In the dream there were a few odd things on the website 1) David had been posting heaps lately (sometimes more than one a day) – which i though was a bit odd (no offence David) & 2) Some of the archived posts didn’t have links as text, they just had colours as links.. I should have noticed the reality fluctuations but didn’t…
This experience caused me to log in today. Even more interesting is seeing the conversation you guys have been having and that the last post in this comment was yesterday and David referred to me. Hmmm. Seems one of you communicated with me in some sort of “reality”…
@Jonathan, as you can see above, this morning I experienced what we called a reality fluctuation. This can be an indication that we are in some type of altered reality… ie. colours for links??? Simliar would be meeting with someone that you currently have no contact with.. The room being arranged differently that you know it to be in waking life.. All these types of differences we call a reality fluctuation… You could then test the reality ie. flying, moving objects through thought, touching an object, etc, etc.
I’ve had experiences where i believe myself to be in what we call “Out of Body” – Different people categorise this differently but for me this is typically categorised by: 1) An awareness approximating that of waking reality 2) I have had vibrations or exit sensations prior to shifting into the reality I now find myself in & 3) It feels different than a dream …
Sometimes altered states that people refer to as Out of Body are happening in a time and space (some call it the Astral) that is different from the waking environment.. Others find they are in what Robert Bruce refers to as the RTZ (real timezone) which approximates waking reality.. if I myself had an experience that met my 3 critera above then I would most likely label it an OOBE whether or not i was in the RTZ or in the Astral realms…
Currently my favourite technique for becoming lucid or OOB is to create points in the day, particularly during my sleep preparation (while showering, cleaning teeth etc) where mentally I retrace as much as I can of the day up to that point in reverse. Starting with the most recent thing i can remember.. I ask myself “How did I get to be here? What is the last thing I remember?”.. I’ve found this then can create an automatic checking during sleep (that you may or may not be aware of, sometimes i’m not aware of the checking but I find if I do this, i’m more likely to have a lucid dream or OOBE on waking)..
There are many methods around for testing “reality”, books on LD’ing or OBE would have some, such as turning lights on and off to see if they work, looking at your own hands (which may cause them to morf!) and others.. They are easy enough to make up yourself..
More and more though, I believe, like David, that these other states, although different, are still a reality.. We simply need TERMS so we can talk to others about them.. As we evolve I think our language will develop to state these things more precisely…
As for getting prepared for OBE: I typically enter the OBE state from either 1)a Lucid Dream 2)I wake partway through the process ie. with vibrations and I follow the process and exit, or 3)I awake slowly enough to be aware of my thoughts, realise I have been sleeping, try to remain still and wait for vibrations to start then exit (usually by rolling over to the side and out)… Even this morning I awoke and before moving I noticed that I had thoughts running in my mind (it’s happened a few times lately and i’m beginning to believe that thoughts could be often running like this while we sleep), though this morning I had no success in getting to the vibratory state..
all I can suggest to you is read plenty on the subject and find what works for you, get plenty of sleep – cause the main time for these experiences in many peoples lives seems to be early morning close to waking.
Practices like meditation and aiming to keep a constant stream of awareness in waking life may also be helpful as will practicing OBE trance at other times of the day when you are well rested. Also try the “wake up, back to sleep method” similar to the “vehram system”. ie. set your alarm (or consciousness to wake you) ie. 5am- stay up for 30min/1hr or so – at this time it would be a good idea to meditate (sitting up) or read books on the OOB subject, then go back to bed (for sleep)…this gives good results.
Like David I suggest reading “Astral Dynamics” by Robert Bruce.
Personally I’ve had both good and bad experiences with binaural beats. If using these I suggest tread lightly at first and if you find yourself becoming agitated in the day maybe back off on these. Most sites that sell binaural beats suggest listening to these causes a spiritual purification of types (and that may be what i am experiencing but I’m not convinced and if so they are too strong for me to be using daily. I’ve gone back to Anapanna and Vipassana meditation mixed with my own “free flow” style).. The first time I did have OBE though was the morning after listening to one of Robert Monroes Wave 1 tracks – the one that says “You are floating.. Imagine yourself floating up and out of body” etc. Track D i think.. so for me mixed results with binaurals…
Hope this helps, feel free to ask more questions and we’ll do our best to help you,
Peace,
Dean
Thanks again guys, this is extremely useful!
Something strange just happened this morning I thought id share, maybe you have experienced it too?
Ill go back to last week – I was in a hotel room sleeping after already being awake to do some work. It was around 630am. I fell asleep but it was strange because I was looking around the room with my eyes (which I knew were shut) and my body was paralyzed. I could even hear things going on around me. I then started freaking out and tried to get up and the top half of me felt like it sat up but the bottom wouldnt move. I then shouted and I was suddenly lying back down and my body was buzzing. I was very aware of all of this on this occasion but it made me realise that this exact same thing has happened to me alot thorughout my life so started looking into it, hence me being here.
This morning and yesterday morning I experienced something im sure ive never felt before. I was lying still awaiting sleep paralyses and my mind was wondering a bit but still very aware. I had an itch on my ear and wanted to itch it, but didnt want to move. Anyway, I then felt my arm move and itch my ear, but my actual arm didnt move. The itch even went away! Then today, I was doing the same thing and my mind wandered a bit and I was thinking about a business contact and I wanted to check if I had their number. I then felt myself walking to my office in the next room and going through my wallet. As I realised this I quickly snapped back to being in my bed. But the weird thing for me was the feelings – I really felt I was doing these things, however the visuals were very dim, almost transparent.
Have either of you encountered this? I cant seem to find anything specific on the net.
Thanks Dean, that was a very clear and well thought out write-up.
Yes. And it even goes further than that. Usually when this type of thing happens to me and I end up back in bed as you described but it usually turns out to be a “false awakening”. I will find myself back in bed and I literally think that I am in waking reality, but in truth I am still in an altered state of awareness and not actually awake. These events are very vivid and I normally can’t discern if I am in waking awareness because of how closely the experience feels to waking life.
Changing the subject….
I would like to attempt to explain why I think you are having these experiences. For most people including myself, we go though our lives not really being aware of things like this and then out of the blue, you find yourself having strange experiences and then much like Dean, myself and others, we find ourselves on websites like this searching for answers. What we end up finding is that these events, although still somewhat isolated, are not as isolated as we thought.
My background is one of logic. I am a programmer and of a more scientific / mathematical mindset. When I started hearing of these type of things I had a very hard time believing in the reality of it all. Which of course is why I needed to experiment this stuff on my own. My spiritual journey started out with me trying to prove something to myself and perhaps others.
After a year of spiritual search growth I find that I am still logical and scientific but something else has happened. I now see that science and math are contained into this box, much like a fish tank. The scientists being the fish are studying the insides of the fish tank and the fish tank being our visible universe (that of which the 5 senses can detect). I have found that our thoughts and more importantly the ego (greed and total identification with thoughts) confine us to this restricted view of reality (true reality being all of the stuff that’s outside of that fish tank). There is nothing wrong with the fish tank and it perfectly fine to remain there for the duration of our human life, but for Dean, you and myself, something has happened. I honestly think that science has hit a wall and until people realize that the scientific search for truth has reached it’s limit, humanity will remain in a stunted evolutionary state and will not move forward and may actually de-evolve. (never leaving the “fish tank”). In other words science and math only exist in the fish tank and do not apply nor can be used outside of the tank.
After studying and practicing spirituality for the last 1.5 years I have been transformed. My point is to get ready, because something is talking to you from outside the “tank” (actually yourself) and trying to wake you up much like it has happened to Dean and myself. It starts with these OOBE type experiences and then grows into something more meaningful.
Since last year I have read about 20 books on spirituality and I have come up with a theory (please bear in mind that this is just a theory). It seems to me that our global society is on a path to self destruction. People have cut themselves off from their source but are at the same time still connected and are ultimately one with this source (everything outside of the fish tank). There seems to be this awakening taking place in a select few which is trying to change the course of humanity. If humanity doesn’t survive will it even matter? I don’t think so, but I think it would be cool to see a world living in peace and harmony and I think that our source would as well. I think that the only thing that has the potential of bringing about such a change “as true world peace” would be for humanity to realize that we ARE more than our physical bodies. I am sure you might agree.
Please also understand that what I have shared here has no direct association to any specific science or religion. You will however find that things I say agree with some aspects of science and religion because truth is found in all aspects of life.
Anyway, here are all the Authors I recommend reading and what each has to offer. Robert Monroe, I have read all of his books and by reading his books I got to see what is out there in the OOB state. He provides a road-map of the astral planes, what it’s like in the OOB realm. Robert Bruce and William Buhlman will teach you how to get there. Thomas Campbell and William Buhlman teach you how OOBEs fit in with modern physics and science. People like Eckhart Tolle will teach you about spirituality and how to bring about positive change in this world. Additionally, there are several DVDs etc down the right hand column of this site that I highly recommend. I compiled this list to provide people with quality resources in hopes to save people time because some of the stuff I have read is scams.
David, I pretty much 100% agree with your view, and in addition, not only does all of the above seem to apply to how I feel, something else about this whole thing is amazing to me. Ive never been a religious kind of person, ever! But at the same time have never felt there is nothing else out there – not necessarily a “god” but just…something! Side by side with this, I have always felt something in my life was missing. I kinda went through attaining the list of possible things that could be missing and when I got to the end still having the same feeling I didnt know what to do. I kind of thought “should I start going to church or something?” in order to find out if this was indeed the missing thing. Now these things are happening, and I know they have also been happening for most of my life, albeit not fully consciously to me, I know that this is the “thing” that was missing. I dont know what to do yet, or where this will take me, but I do know that it feels right and im looking forward to it!
Thanks for listing the authors, ive already ordered all of Monroe’s books along with Astral Dynamics, and will certainly check out the rest of them, as well as the DVD’s you mention. Its a slow process for me as I live in the Middle East and getting books and DVD on spirituality doesnt seem easy so all must be ordered from the USA!
Hey guys! It happened! My first conscious OOBE!! Rather than spam your comments section constantly I started a blog (inspired by this one!) at http://astralbeginnings.wordpress.com/ – would love you to check out my latest post if you get a second! Tonight has been a very strange night!
@Jonathan
I commented over on your new blog. I have also added a link to you blog to the right side under “Interesting Blogs”.
Thanks David! Your blog is also listed on mine
