My First Experience With Isochronic Tones

July 24th, 2010

Anyone who has been around meditation or the exploration of consciousness scene long enough knows about binaural beats and how they can be used to coax the brain into specific rhythms. I have been using a wide variety of beats for about two years now including Hemi-Sync, Brain Sync and a few others. I have have produced some objective results using beats in regards to faster learning, more intense focus and with lucid dreaming and OOBEs.  The thing is,  it’s hard to know if the results are being manifested from my intent or  if the beats play some part. I tend to think that binaural beats do work based on the research that has been done at the Monroe Institute, however without personal experience to back it up I can only consider it a likely possibility.

A few months ago I was looking through the iPhone store  for applications to dynamically generate binaural beats and I came across the term isochronic tones. Interesting! I quickly headed over to Google and started reading about this new technology. Wikipedia defines them as:

Isochronic tones are regular beats of a single tone used for brainwave entrainment. Similar to monaural beats, the interference pattern that produces the beat is outside the brain so headphones are not required, but since isochronic tones are more pronounced, the stimuli is even stronger. They differ from monaural beats which are a sine wave pulse rather than entirely separate pulses of a single tone.

The reason I was looking for an app to generate beats was because I got tired of having to depend on one implementation to generate some kind of result. I would rather just have an interface that allows for frequency adjustments and dynamic track overlays. I found a few iPhone apps that would do this, but the tracks were always limited and were of very poor quality, to the point of being a distraction. Then there are so many apps of this type within the store that it seems more like a get rich scheme rather than designed to actually do anything.

Last night curiosity got the best of me so decided to try out the AmbiScience™ series. The application I bought is called Pure Meditation | AmbiScience™ by By Tesla Audio Sciences. I think it ended up costing me a whopping $2.99. What sold me on this product was the fact that it uses the isochronic tones that I have been wanting to try and the track names sounded interesting with names like Lapis Lazuli, Fire Opal, Amethyst, Topaz, The Android’s Dream and many others. As you might have guessed, it lets me pick a frequency and then lay tracks over the top, which was my original goal. Full description here.

So what did the pudding taste like? This morning around 6 AM I ended up using Shamanic Meditation Low Pitch (Isochronic tones at 4.5HZ) with a Brown Noise overlay. The track volume was at 100% and the tone volume at 75%. The iPhone volume was set at about 8. The product allows for a 4.5 – 9 HZ frequency with a choice of binaural beats or isochronic tones. I was laying on my right side and I began to use a concentrative type meditation. The goal at first was to have no thought and then I progressed to just focusing on the tone. The brown noise track basically sounded like a soft wind.

My wife was sitting in front of me holding the baby and I remember hearing him occasionally. Within about 10 minutes he started fading and I felt a floating sensation. I shifted my focus away from my body and upwards and felt myself float up through the ceiling of the room and out of the house. I drifted up higher and off into the sky and then started spinning head over heal  back down into the house. The entire time I was consciously aware that I was in an altered state and could hear the tone the entire time. I had pretty good control over this experience. I like the sensation of flying so I ended up flying all over the sky above our house for several minutes.

I shifted my focus back to my physical body and found myself laying in bed staring at my wife holding the baby. I decided to end the experience and reached up to take the earphones off and my hands passed though my head. I discovered that I was still in the altered state and had actually been looking at her through my closed eyelids. I simply focused on coming back into phase with my physical body, felt gravity and knew I was really back. I opened my physical eyes and my wife was in the exact spot and position that I saw her in while in the altered state.

I found this experience interesting  in that the isochronic tone seemed to have locked me  into this altered state because I had to really focus on pulling myself out of it. This is a very good sign! Perhaps I will be able to repeat this again. We shall see.

Confusion Within Lucid Dream Prevents Projection

May 6th, 2010

I have been having a ton of dreams lately after starting up daily meditation. Last night was no exception as I can remember four different dreams last night, one of which was lucid.

I went to bed around 1:30 PM last night and meditated until I lost awareness. The exercise has been to stay aware as long as I can before sleep takes over while constantly focusing on something that keeps thoughts out. Additionally, any time that I wake up I repeat the same exercise.

I became lucid inside a dream at some point last night at what felt like about 2:00 AM. I was dreaming about a girl stealing my credit cards out of my wallet and then all of the sudden the dream shifted and I found myself in sleep paralysis in bed. Normally when I get into sleep paralysis I know exactly what to do, a simple thought of astral projection will take me to full waking awareness or into what is called the out of body state. The problem this time was that I was laying in my childhood bunk bed. Momentarily I was no longer an adult and had drifted back in time. It’s hard to explain, but at some point fear manifested because of a faint memory of being an adult that slipped in and caused me to question my sanity. It just got progressively worse the more I tried to bring the adult memory back.

During this lucid episode I was completely paralyzed and it seemed that part of a separate awareness was over-lapping this experience and was saying “this is it, project!”. The other part was the fear of not being able to find the time based identity. I was able to move my head and look around the room and it was truly amazing and nostalgic, the room was just like I remembered it with two sets of bunk beds. My other brothers shared a room with me during my childhood. I was paralyzed laying on my right side and was facing the other bed across from me on the other side of the room. It was a small room with only about a 5 foot section of floor space between the beds. Both beds were in opposing corners of the room with a window to the backyard between the two beds. The top of my head was facing the backyard. Opposite wall from the window was the old TV we used to play Atari on sitting on the old clothes drawer.

I kept staring at the TV throughout the experience. It was turned on and there was static on the screen and it looked normal for the most part, however the static seemed to occasionally have huge green flashes within the static. This seemed odd and my attention became intensely focused on the TV. This is where my awareness slowly started transitioning back to current time and the room faded out and my current room began to emerge. Through closed eyelids I saw the source of the green flashes. I was was looking at my Welz Rad5 Chi Generator and their flashing green lights which just happened to be sitting in the exact same location in relation to where my old childhood TV was. I slowly regained full waking consciousness and opened my eyes.

This was a really cool experience and if my identity based fear had not taken over me I would have projected. This has been a known fear for awhile and I think that it’s something that I need to overcome.

Meditation Produces Spinning / Falling Sensation

May 4th, 2010

My new meditation schedule is twice a day and I am hoping to see some results. Hopefully by writing about results will help to solidify their reality and as always give me data to look back on after my brain has long forgotten.

I went to bed around 10:30 PM last night and meditated in a seated position for about 15 minutes, became tired, switched to a laying position and fell asleep.

I woke up around 5:50 AM feeling tired. I got up and went to the restroom and came back to bed and I seemed to be less tired after getting up and walking for a few minutes. I put on my headphones and started listening to Brain Sync – Brain Massage and began to meditate by running the mantra ah-lum-baa-dee-dum – ah-lum-bar-dee-dum through my head. The goal was and is always to eliminate thoughts, and I know this intellectually, however knowing and doing (or should I say not doing) are two different things.

The Brain Sync track starts off with background binaural beats, soothing music and a river and then as the track progresses the music gets softer and softer until it’s completely gone, leaving only the sound of water.  The meditation technique and this track seemed to work well together. The music got softer and so did the complexity of my mantra until all that was left was the sound of flowing water and a faint remnant of my mantra, as if my mind became something separate from me.  A few moments later I let the mantra go and latched onto my breathing which was getting more and more shallow. When thoughts found their way in I simply observed them and went back to focusing on breathing.

Before long I noticed that my awareness was slipping away and I had to keep that from happening by quickly directing my focus back to breathing. Every time I would come back to breathing I would have a spinning falling sensation and a faint tingling throughout my body. Each time I would pull my awareness back the sensations would get stronger. I would have just let myself fallen asleep if it had not been for several meetings at work this morning. Normally, at this stage if fall asleep, I will hit strong vibrations and have a full blown OOBE.

I finally called it quits  at 7:15 AM to prepare for meetings.

Thomas Campbell Meditation Triggers Spontaneous OOBE

May 3rd, 2010

I started my journey for spiritual growth about 1.5 years ago. From the beginning I have intuitively known that I need to quiet the incessant cacophony in my head to make any real progress. This has been a real challenge with so much work all the time. I have been searching for a practical meditation technique that only retains the active components needed to be effective without any added nonsense. The Buddhist meditation was close but didn’t totally connect with my personality.

I am not going to claim success, because I just don’t have enough experience with this technique to do that however I do know that Thomas Campbell’s meditation technique showed some positive results last night on the first try. I really liked when he said that humanity is just a wrinkle in the fabric of consciousness and by using a simple mantra we can create enough background noise to remove the wrinkles leaving only pure consciousness. He has a way with words that I can relate to. Eckhart Tolle almost had me there but not quite. The funny part is that I have been saying all along that the mantra itself didn’t matter but I missed a vital component.  I think the key was that I was using real words that were attached to meanings and that was creating thoughts. Last night for the first time I used an alternating mantra of sounds with no meanings. Each manta contained 5 syllables with only the third syllable changing which created resonate meaningless complex sounds which I kept coming back to anytime thoughts would arise.

I went to bed tired at about 10:30 PM and put on my headphones and started listening to Brain Sync Dream Wave Meditation to block out background noise and then started the mantra ah-lum-bar-dee-dum – ah-lum-baa-dee-dum over and over.Within 10 minutes all I could hear in my head was bar-baa bar-baa. 10 minutes after that all physical sensory perception was gone and I was a single point of consciousness floating in 3d blackness. I could feel a surge of energy flowing through my body and my heart felt like it was racing prior to this. I ended the meditation session and went to sleep.

I woke up at 2:30 AM itching and could not seem to go back to sleep so I got up and went to the restroom and then came back to bed and listened to some random music for a few minutes until I started getting sleepy again. I put on Brain Sync – Brain Massage this time and started the mantra again. I fell asleep within a few minutes.

Around 4:00 PM I woke up in vibrations and instinctively exited my body and was standing in front of my house in the dark. I must have teleported there. This was the first OOBE followed by 2 more. The first one was interesting and I will just say that I was creating my surroundings just by thinking about what I wanted. I will not get into too many details. I had a second OOBE but I can’t actually remember what happened, only that it occurred.

The third OOBE was the most interesting of the three. I was standing on the top of some building that stood alone in some remote country landscape at daybreak. I was thinking to myself about how I had always wanted to project into space. I figured I would give it a try. I thought about flying into space and instantly was projected upward at and incredible speed and stopped at an unknown altitude in complete darkness. With my mind I asked to see the cosmos and suddenly at what appeared like an altitude of about +50º to my right appeared the Milky Way Galaxy with the Moon sitting in front of it. I was so crystal clear and beautiful that I can’t even describe it. I found myself back in waking awareness right after this and then went back to sleep  and had no other experiences.

I would like to point out that if you are going to use Thomas Campbell’s technique for meditation then you will need to read his trilogy My Big TOE. Although I explained his technique above, there is a lot of reading material that leads up to that technique and prepares you for how to effectively use the technique. The main part is adjusting the attitude. Like I said, Eckhart Tolle get’s very close to the exact same message but comes across in a slightly less direct manner. Thomas Campbell is a nuclear physicist and is one of the main guys that helped Robert Monroe invent Hemi-Sync and start the Monroe Institute. He was also one of the main players participating in their exploration of consciousness.  It’s no surprise to me that the technique worked so well.
